Expand ECHO's Workforce Development Kitchen program by investing in its strategic plan to develop employment pathways, provide job training in all aspects of food services, and create a social enterprise for sustained long-term success.

ECHO Workforce Development Kitchen Program

The Need

From 2020 to 2030, the leisure and hospitality industry in San Luis Obispo County is expected to need 37.7% more employees. California Employment Development Department for San Luis Obispo County indicates restaurant cooks as one of the top 10 occupations with the most job openings expected and the second highest pay.

In 2023, ECHO's Meal Provider program served over 60,000 dinners to those facing food insecurity. The volunteer-led dinner program feeds approximately 100 guests every night. ECHO's Workforce Kitchen and food program management will provide the support needed when volunteers are unavailable. Trainees will also assist with breakfast and lunch preparations.

A portion of this project involves creating ECHO's first social enterprise. Social enterprises within nonprofit organizations address both financial sustainability and social impact by generating significant revenues and reducing reliance on traditional funding sources.
